Hiram Oramid Meader, son of Edward Sargent Meader (1791-1866) [0142] and Clarissa Moore (d.1866), was born April 18, 1830. He went to sea on a whaling voyage from New Bedford and was long supposed lost. It is said he went to California and thence to sea as mate of a ship. E. B. Howe, husband of Mary Meader [0267], Hiram's sister, received a letter from him in 1869, postmarked Fiji Islands, in which he wrote that he had lived there for sixteen years, cultivated a cotton plantation and was married and had two children.
