0234. Gideon Meader (1816 - 1868)
Gideon Meader, son of James Meader (bc.1790) [0126] and Nicea Bull (1795-1868), was born September 30, 1816 at Lincoln, VT [or March 26, 1827 at Farnham, Quebec] and died April 27, 1868. March 31, 1842 he married Louisa Purinton, daughter of Elijah Purinton and Anna Taber and grand-daughter of Thomas Taber and Hannah Davis, born September 26, 1820 at Lincoln.
February 23, 1843 the Alum Creek, Ohio Monthly Meeting accepted their Certificate of Removal from Farnham, Lower Canada, dated June 20, 1842 and endorsed to the Vermilion, Illinois Monthly Meeting. It is likely, then, that Gideon Meader was brought up, if not born, in Farnham, Quebec, Canada, married there and within three months decided to return to the States. Since he was in Ohio within a year of his marriage, it may be guessed that the children were all born in the Columbus, Ohio [the location of Alum Creek] area in the 1840s and 1850s.
Louisa Purinton died February 25, 1900 at Auburn, NE. Her obituary in the Auburn newspaper read, in part:
“While quite young she moved with her parents to Canada were she lived until 1842, when she was married after the custom of the Quakers, to Gideon Meader and moved to Waukesha County, WI.
“In the early fifties they moved to Fond du Lac County, and in 1865 came to Nemaha County.
“She was a Christian from early youth, being a member of the Quaker Church and a descendant of one [John] Cook, who came over on the Mayflower. There being none of the Quaker Society near them in Wisconsin, she and her husband joined the Wesleyan Methodists, with whom they worshiped while there. There being none of the Wesleyan Methodist faith here, she united with the M. E. Church. She was a strong believer in holiness and lived a life worthy of imitation.”
The children of Gideon Meader and Louisa Purinton were:
1046 i. Nathan Purinton Meader, born January 2, 1843.
1047 ii. Cyrus Cross Meader, born August 26, 1844.
