2673. George W. Meader (1847 - 1908)
George W. Meader, son of Allen Meader (b.1810) [0262] and Sarah Copp ( - ), was born in Ellsworth, ME August 16, 1847 and died February 17, 1908 in Sibley, IA. He spend his boyhood in Ellsworth, where he learned the trade of blacksmith. He enlisted in the Union Army and served a few months in the 16th Maine Volunteers. While in the service he contracted typhoid fever, and for a long time he was in poor health. In 1866 he moved to Eldora, IA and the following year, partly for health reasons and partly for work, went to Colorado. In 18761 he moved to Gowrie, IA, where he lived until 1882. In 1888 he settled in Sibley.
He was one of the best known hardware men in the region. At one tome he was the largest single retailer of binding twine in the United States. He served one year as mayor of Sibley. He was always a progressive man and a good citizen who enjoyed the confidence of his fellows.
In 1870 at Vinton, IA he married Emma Rebecca Wass, born September 5, 1849 in Ilk Grove, IL and died April 8, 1930 at Sibley.
