0587. James Laurence Meader (1893 - 1974)
James Laurence Meader, son of Frederick Perkins Meader (1872-1944) [0481] and Emma Reynolds (1864-1963), was born in Milton, NH May 31, 1893 and died in Honolulu October 31, 1974. He received his B.A. degree from Bates College in 1915 (and an honorary LL.D. in 1935), and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi. In 1928 he was made President of Russell Sage College, a position he held until 1942. During World War II he was with General MacArthur at the liberation of the Philippines.
June 8, 1946 he married Eleanor Morgan. Later that year he was appointed regional director of the Office of Price Administration in Washington. Later he served with the Department of State as First Secretary, Public Affairs Officer at Manila, Malaya and Thailand. He retired from government service in 1962 and became Public Affairs Officer for the East-West Center, University of Hawaii.
