0541. Fred Martin Meader (1876 - 1946)
Fred Martin Meader, son of Marlin Silas Meader (1849-1913) [0427] and Ellen Carr (b.1849), was born at North Haverhill, NH on January 28, 1876, and died in April, 1946 in Detroit, MI. He married Emma Cornelius on September 20, 1905 at 90 Dodge Street, Buffalo, NY (her home). She was born at Hamburg, NY on February 14, 1874 the daughter of Jacob Cornelius and granddaughter of Martin Cornelius who came with his wife from Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany about 1845. She died May 30, 1974 in Jackson, MI. Thinking it would be of benefit to her young husband, she trained for nursing. She was a life member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
He began school life in the town of North Haverhill, then at the Moody School [Mount Hermon School], from which he was graduated in 1898. After a year in business life he entered Wesleyan University and was graduated from there in June, 1902. He then went to the Connecticut State Hospital for the Insane for study and after that he spent a few months at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. He was graduated from Johns Hopkins University with his medical degree in 1909. He accepted a position at the Medical Department of Syracuse University as an instructor in pathology and bacteriology, and while there he was elected City Bacteriologist for Syracuse.
In 1911 the University sent him to Harvard for a postgraduate course in public health. In 1914 he was appointed Director of Communicable Diseases in the New York State Department of Public Health. During World War I he was a Major in the Medical Corps in France.
In a career of nearly fifty years Dr. Meader became prominent for his work in preventive medicine. He retired as Medical Director of the Detroit Department of Health in 1941 but returned to medical practice to help relieve the wartime physician shortage.
