0491. Artie Meyer Meader (1867 - 1953)
Artie Meyer Meader, son of Stephen Volney Meader (1835-1914) [0384] and Priscilla Meyer (d.1909), was born in Walden, VT on March 11, 1867 and died on August 6, 1953 in Chatham, MA, aged 86. He was brought up on his father's farm and attended the public schools of the district. He did the usual tasks assigned a farm boy and when old enough hired out to other farmers in surrounding towns. A little later he took up carpentry and assisted in the building of many of the larger barns in Barnet, Ryegate, and Peacham. while engaged in this work he was employed on a building project for Edmund Taft in Peacham. In December, 1892 Mr. Taft induced him to go to Whitinsville, MA to work in the carpenter shop of the Whitin Machine Works, manufacturers of textile machinery. Here he worked until May, 1893, when due to lack of work he returned to Vermont. In October, 1895 he returned to Whitinsville at the urging of William Taft, General Superintendent of the Whitin Machine Works.
He retired on July 1, 1941 after working nearly fifty years for the Whitin Machine Works, of which 39 years was as a foreman. He joined the Masonic Order in 1906. He was Master of the Granite Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in 1911 and 1912, District Deputy Grand Master in 1917 and 1918, and a member of the Board of Trustees of Granite Lodge for many years. He was High Priest of St. Elmo Chapter, R. A. M. in 1924 and 1925; Patron of Dekamus Chapter, No. 20, 0. E. S. in 1913-1915 and 1929. For a time he was a member of Hiram Council, R. & S. M. of Worcester, MA.
He Married:
1) Nancy J. Hastie in December 1894, at West Barnet, VT, the only daughter of William Francis Hastie and Amaret Gibson. She was born in Barnet on October 8, 1864 and died in Whitinsville on December 5, 1906.

2) Jennie (Gibson) Bodwell as his second wife at St. Johnsbury, VT on August 20, 1908. She was a first cousin of his first wife. She died March 9, 1940 in Whitinsville, leaving a son, Arthur Gibson Bodwell by her first husband, deceased.
