0417. Charles Albert Meader (1868 - 1945)
Charles Albert Meader, son of Charles H. Meader (b.1844) [0284] and Mary McDuffie (1845-1919), was born December 29, 1866 in Rochester, NH and died October 17, 1945 in Providence, RI. He married Lucie Claflin Briggs, born about 1871 the daughter of Osmond Henry Briggs and Lavinia Bayley. The Reverend Charles Albert Meader lived in various parts of Rhode Island.
His obituary in the Providence Evening Bulletin of October 18, 1945 read in part:
“During his undergraduate days at Brown Mr. Meader was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and president of his class in the year of his graduation, 1891. Prominent in athletics at the Providence institution, he served as captain of the baseball nine and in the track squad as a runner.
“After his graduation from Brown he taught school at Pawtucket High School for three years before beginning his studies for the ministry at the Cambridge (MA) Episcopal Theological Seminary, where he obtained his degree in 1897.
“Immediately following his ordination he became rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Harris, where he served for six years. He then became rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Taunton for a comparable period.
“Then in 1900 he began a 17-year period of supervision over Episcopal missions in a rural section of Rhode Island, comprising Kent and Washington Counties and the western portion of Providence County.
“For more than eight years his headquarters were established at the Church of the Ascension in Auburn, and as general missionary he served as dean of the convocations. During this period he organized a congregation and guided the establishment of Christ Church in Coventry.
“He was chosen rector of St. Luke's Church in East Greenwich in 1925, serving there until his retirement in 1942. After 1942 he was rector emeritus until his death.”
