Sarah Ann Meader, daughter of Nathan Avery Meader (1817-p.1874) [0258] and Mary Ann Lamphere (1816-1853), was born January 10, 1842 in Thetford, VT. In 1849 she was living at the home of Daniel Eastman in Newbury, VT. According to the 1850 and 1860 Censuses, she was living in the Poorhouse at Newbury at those times. In January, 1850 she was attending school in Newbury; her education apparently continued only into 1851. According to the 1870 Census she was then living with the family of Samuel Eastman, Superintendent of the County Home at Newbury. By this time she had had a child:
1979 i. Jane Alice Meader, illegitimate daughter by William Meader of Newbury, born March 9, and recorded in the 1870 Census.

Sarah married Marshall Jenks, a farmer in comfortable circumstances living near Lyme, NH, a mile or so across the Connecticut River from Thetford. He was frozen to death in sight of his home in March, 1887. She continued to live in the family homestead, which had belonged to his father, with her daughter.
