0367. Ellen Eliza Meader (1847 - 1874)
Ellen Eliza Meader, daughter of Joshua Field Meader (1806-1872) [0210] and Jemima Wright (1806-1897), was born May 22, 1847, probably in Ferrisburg, VT, and died March 18, 1874, probably in Poplar Ridge, NY. She married James J. Otis, son of James D. and Mary M. Otis and grandson of Job Otis of New Bedford, MA. Her brother, William Meader [0365], wrote of her:
“Her constitution, naturally frail, fell an easy prey to the unfavorable influence of the climate of the country [Cayuga, NY], and consumption early closed her short life. She was an affectionate wife and mother and a consistent member of the Church. She passed away peacefully, like one falling asleep, having a triumphant assurance of salvation through the merits of the Redeemer she had loved so well. In her childhood she was inclined to gaiety, but in her young womanhood she found she ought to make a change in her apparel, and she adopted the plain garb of the Friends, of which she was a member. During her illness her spirit was often refreshed by the sweet incense of Heavenly Love, under a sweet sense of which she could say, in her deepest affliction:
Tongue cannot tell, nor pen express
The joy it is to feel
The lowly pressure of the Lord
Over my spirit steal.”
The children of Ellen Meader and James Otis were:
i. Frederick Arthur Otis, born October 16, 1868 in Poplar Ridge, NY. July 6, 1892 he married Ella Holloway of Flushing, OH. He died April 4, 1893 at Pine Bluffs, NC. There is no record of children.
ii. Charlotte E. Otis, born November 5, 1871 at Poplar Ridge.
