0309. Henry Isiah Meader (1857 - 1926)
Henry Isiah Meader, son of Henry Meader (c.1815-1869) [1655] and Jane Keithley (1826-1890), was born April 17, 1857 in Washington, DC, and died there January 25, 1926. He apparently attended DC public schools, as the 1870 Census records him as having attended school during the preceding year. His occupations were boilermaker, landsman of the U. S. Navy, blacksmith, mechanic and merchant (grocer).
He served two enlistments in the U. S. Navy, from March 16, 1876 to March 15, 1877 and from March 19, 1877 to July 13, 1877, aboard the ship Tallapoosa, a wooden steamer side-paddle wheel. He enlisted at the age of 20 for one year, occupation boilermaker, blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, five feet seven and a half inches, anchor on left hand.
According to his obituary in the then Evening Star:
“Henry I. Meader, 68 years old, a retired grocer of Southeast Washington, long prominent in the Masonic fraternity and other organizations of this city, died at his home...after a long illness. He was a native of this city and except for a few years he spent in the United States Navy had been a lifelong resident here.
“Starting in the grocery business here 45 years ago, Mr. Meader built up his business until it was one of the largest of its kind south of New York prior to his retirement 15 years ago.
“Mr. Meader was a member of Washington Centennial Lodge, No. 14, F.A.A.M.; the Washington Naval Chapter, No. 6, Royal Arch, Masons; Columbia Commandery, No. 2, Knights Templar, and of Almas Temple of the Mystic Shrine. He also was a member of Old Glory Council of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, the Woodmen of the World and the Rhode Island Avenue Citizens Association.”
He married:

1) Mary O. Dunan on April 17, 1882 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Washington. She was born September 17, 1859 in Baltimore and died May 13, 1895 in Washington. Her parents were born in Baltimore.

The children of Henry Meader and Mary Dunan were:

i. Hattie I. Meader, born December 24, 1883 and died September 6, 1884.
ii. Unnamed child, possibly stillborn.
iii. Essie Meader, born October 9, 1886 and died September 11, 1891.

2039 v. Annie Eliza Meader, born June 23, 1889 in Washington and died July 4, 1942 in Colonial Beach, VA.
0431 vi. Raymond Meader, born October 28, 1892 and died May 12, 1965.
vii. Eva Lillian Meader, born September 16, 1893 and died of convulsions April 16, 1894.

2) Margaret A. Neslin Fox, a widow, born June 10, 1869 and died December 16, 1943. They were married November 22, 1903. She brought with her two children of her previous marriage:

Frederick L. Fox, who was living in Washington in 1926.
Florence Helen Fox, born August 18, 1888 in Washington and died February 22, 1929 in Atlanta, GA. She married George W. Bauman, Jr.
