Daniel Webster Meader, son of Elisha Meader (1788-1877) [0165] and Widow Abigail Webster ( - ), was born near Meader Pond in Warren, NH June 13, 1832. He spent his boyhood in his father's home in Haverhill, where they had moved in 1835. At the age of 16, about 1848, he went to live for two years with his married brother Paul [0298] in Center Haverhill. He then went to Hartford, CT, and was employed by his half-brother, Samuel [0295], a railroad contractor. While working out a contract in Pennsylvania, he met his future wife, Lydia Swartz, of "Slocum Hollow," now called Scranton.
January 9, 1858, in Old Forge, PA he married Lydia A. Swartz, born in Scranton February 4, 1836 and died July 3, 1895, daughter of Elias Swartz and Zuba Miller. She was an active member of the North Haverhill Methodist Episcopal Church, held membership in the Women's Foreign Missionary Society, and belonged to the Women's Relief Corps of the Natt Westgate G. A. R. Post.
Daniel Meader then left his brother's employ and began married life as a hotelkeeper at Pittston, PA. for about two years. Then he returned to Haverhill for a year and later settled down with his father in the old home. Around 1863 he purchased the Reed Bacon farm on Pond Road, and lived there until 1882. His mother and father lived with him and died there. At some time, apparently, he spent two years in California.
He engaged in starch-making with his brother Paul, possibly in the 1870s. He moved to the Langdon Bailey place in North Haverhill, where his wife died. He later lived with his wife's niece at Harrisville, NH. He served Haverhill two years as Selectman and ten as Supervisor. He was a member of the I-O-O-F and the Pink Granite Grange.
The children of Daniel Meader and Lydia Swartz were:
i. Herman Edgar Meader, born January 6, 1859 and died of scarlet fever October 3, 1859.
ii. Edwin Herbert Meader, born July 2, 1860 and died March 10, 1861.
