0062. Stephen Meader

Stephen Meader, son of Benjamin Meader (1736-1827) [0022] and Patience Varney Hanson (1741-1825), was born in Rochester, NH December 19, 1782. He moved to Vermont and died February 20, 1856, in his 74th year. On August 30, 1804 he married Sarah Whitehouse, daughter of Jonathan and Mehitable Whitehouse, who was born April 17, 1780 and died June 29, 1858, in her 79th year and three months after her husband. He was a farmer. Both were members of the Society of Friends. According to A. A. Meader, he was:

“a man much respected in the community, careful to discharge his social and religious duties. His house was a resting place for the weary, especially for those engaged in promoting the Redeemer's Kingdom, many of whom often partook of his kind hospitality. During his last illness, which was attended with much bodily suffering, he was never heard to complain but often expressed his hope in the Blessed Savior. As he drew near to the close of life his hope and trust evidently increased, for on one occasion he said to a friend, ‘I have none to trust in but my Dear Savior.’"

His wife was of a meek and quiet spirit, manifesting a true Christian interest not only for the members of her own family but for all with whom she mingled. Her health for many years had been much impaired, depriving her of the privilege of meeting her friends in their religious meetings, yet not abating her interest in spiritual things. She often attended to her final close, summing up all in the expression, "The will of the Lord be done, whether in life or death."

0158	viii.	Benjamin Meader, born December 17, 1822 and died February 20, 1892.
