0035. Nicholas Meader (1754 – 1856)

Nicholas Meader, son of John Meader (1713-1797) [0012] and Hannah Stewart (1736-1798), was born in Nantucket on August 17, 1754 and died December 22, 1836, in his 83rd year. On March 14, 1776 he married Rachel Allen, daughter of John and Rachel Allen, who was born October 31, 1756 and died November 22, 1842, in her 87th year.

Nicholas Meader was captain of a vessel that he owned. He traded between New York and the West Indies until he became quite wealthy. Previous to 1779 his father moved from Newtown to his farm in Polpis [not in atlas], a few miles from Nantucket. Nicholas moved into his father's house on Orange St., Newtown, Nantucket on May 18, 1779 when he was 24 and his father was 65. The land around the house was fenced in 1782 at a cost of $14. The 1790 Census records Nicholas Meader living in Nantucket with a family of one adult male, four males under 16, and 3 females.

After the death of Nathan [0091], Nicholas' son, the house was sold. By 1900 the house had been sold twice since the death of John Meader [0095], and in that year it was owned by a Folger.

The children of Nicholas Meader and Rachel Allen, all probably born in Nantucket, were:
