Emma Laura Meader, daughter of Charles Meader (1831-1875) [0219] and Marozia Gove (b.1839), was born October 28, 1863. She remained unmarried. She graduated from Lynn High School and became a stenographer with the Thomson, Houston Electric Company in Lynn.
My name is Donna Lilly and my grandmother was named Dorothy Marie Searles and she married to become Dorothy Marie Everson. Her parents were Edgar Searles and Geneva Searles. I believe that Edgar and Geneva divorced at some point.
When she was a young teenager, perhaps 13 years old or so, she was sent to live with "the Meader sisters". The sisters were named Emma, Allie, and Effie.
The reasons for her going to live with them remain a mystery in my family. My aunt is the only member of the family left alive to recall any of this. She is 94 now, and she tells me that as a child she always knew her mom went to live with the Meader sisters. There was not ever much of a reason given, but it seems to her now, in hindsight, that it's evident there was something amiss at my grandmother's family's home.
Recently my aunt gifted me jewelry that she has collected over the years. One of the pieces was apparently, my grandmother's and must have been gifted to her by the Meader sisters.
It is 4 very old dimes, from the 1800's, that have been worn down on one side and each dime has engraved on it one name: Emma, Allie, Effie, and Meader. The three names are on top, then the last name dangles below.
My understanding is that the 3 sisters were "spinsters"! Such an antiquated word, and I don't know that maybe they at some point had families themselves?
