Wilbur F. Meader, son of Shubael L. Meader (1807-1860) [1011] and Abigail Follett (b.1806), was born on August 11, 1834 in Industry, ME and died in Cook County, IL in November, 1901. According to Memories of Union Township, 1883:
“Wilbur F. Meader learned the stonecutter's trade, but followed it only two or three years; since then he has been engaged in farming. At the age of ten he came with his parents to Dearborn County, Illinois, where he remained until 1873 when he came to Union Township, Benton County, Indiana and bought eighty acres of wild land and converted it to a high state of cultivation. He has also erected substantial buildings and has one of the best farms in the township. Mr. Meader was married September [11], 1859 to Rose C. Gibbons.
“She was born in Virginia in August, 1836. The 1872 Assessment List of Personal Property for Kankakee shows W. F. Meader with two horses, 37 cattle, 1 mule, 1 carriage or wagon, un-enumerated property $40, 20 acres of wheat, 50 acres of corn, 30 acres of other field products. Total tax: $41.33.
"This man appeared to be one of the wealthiest men in the area, or at least paid tax on the most personal property. In that section cattle were sometimes on feed in the grazing lands." - Helen King.
