Ralph Gibson Meader, son of Robert E. Meader (1871-1952) [0455] and Jennie Gibson (1869-1929), was born in Eaton Rapids, MI September 6, 1904. He was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University (A.B. 1925), had an A.M. degree from Hamilton College (1927) and a Ph.D. from Yale (1932). His field was neuro-anatomy. He was Instructor, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in Yale School of Medicine from 1931 to 1948; he became Assistant Director and Associate Director of the Board of Scientific Advisors of the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research, 1942-48. In 1948 he became Chief of the Research Grants Branch and in 1960 Associate Director of the National Cancer Institute. In 1965 he was appointed Deputy Director (Research Administration) of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, from which post he retired in 1976 to "become part-time Consultant on Grants and Contracts for the Hospital.”
He was a Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation studying in The Netherlands in 1938-9. He had an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and of Sigma Xl. He was a member of American Association of Anatomists, American Association for the Advancement of Science (Fellow), American Association for Cancer Research, Society for the Study of Development of Growth, Corporation of the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, and others. He served for many years on the Selection and Scheduling Committee for the Gordon Research Conferences, as an Incorporator and Trustee for the Spaulding Youth Center, and for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center for Mental Retardation. He was also a Consultant for the National Cancer Institute and a member of the Biomedical Library Review Committee of the National Library of Medicine, HEW.
June 16, 1928 he married Olive Myrle Root, daughter of Professor and Mrs. Ralph Eugene Root, in Annapolis, MD. Her father was Senior Professor in the Postgraduate School of the U.S. Navy and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics. Olive was born February 7, 1906 in Forest City, IA. The couple retired in 1976 to Calef Farm in Sanborton, NH, where they celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary June 16-17, 1978.
