0156. Levi Meader (1813 - 1885)
Levi Meader, son of Stephen Meader (1782-1856) [0062] and Sarah Whitehouse (1780-1858), was born in Rochester, NH February 4, 1813 and died there September 25, 1885. He married Amanda Eastman of Peacham, VT, then 20 years old, on December 24, 1837, and they lived in Meaderboro, NH. She died on March 24, 1888. In 1851 they moved to Gonic Village, where they and their descendants continued homes. [Further anecdotal material in Genealogy of NH., II, 582-3.]
He was a farmer, according to Sinnett, and he had a manufactory at Rochester. He was a genial hearted man full of sly humor which bubbled over in spite of himself. He enjoyed a joke or witticism keenly and was quick with a rejoinder. He liked nothing better than to lat aside for the time his Quaker coat and have a friendly wrestling bout with whoever had the temerity to tackle him, and he seldom came off second. He took great interest in town affairs, and was an energetic and influential worker in politics. He was twice elected to represent the town in the state legislature.
