2011. George Farnham Meader (1883 - 1963)
George Farnham Meader, son of William F. Meader (1838-1915) [0274] and Jane Stephens (b.1845), was born July 6, 1883 in Minneapolis and died December 17, 1963 in Los Angeles. He attended schools in Minneapolis and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1907 with a law degree. His musical and entertainment career began as a boy choir singer at Gethsemane Episcopal Church in Minneapolis and later in Chicago. After graduation from college, as his father insisted, he continued voice training in Stuttgart, Germany under Madame Schoene-Rene and then sang as a leading tenor in the Royal Opera from 1912-1920. After World War I he returned to the United States to become a leading tenor with the Metropolitan Opera in New York until 1932.
His stage career covered four years with the Lunts and two years with Helen Hayes. After going west to California he continued his acting career in the movies and television. He retired for physical disability a few years before his death.
He married Maria Karrer August 22, 1914 in Stuttgart. She was born in Cologne, Germany June 21, 1896 and died December 22, 1973 in Vicenza, Italy.
