0364. Phebe Jane Meader (1828 - 1860)
Phebe Jane Meader, daughter of Joshua Field Meader (1806-1872) [0210] and Jemima Wright (1806-1897), was born July 2, 1828 in Vermont [probably Ferrisburg or Lincoln] and died in a new settlement in Minnesota on January 8, 1860. September 14, 1846 she married Benjamin J. Taber, son of Dr. Benjamin Taber and Phebe Carker [(Parker)?] of VT. The young couple moved to Minnesota. Her brother William [0365], a minister in the Society of Friends, wrote of her: "She was the first of the settlers to be called away, and for some time the prairie flowers blossomed around her lonely grave."
The children of Phebe Meader and Benjamin Taber were:
i. Irwin G. Taber, born January 6, 1849, He married a Margaret. In 1891 they were missionaries of the Society of Friends in Matehuala, Mexico.
ii. Julia Emery Taber, born July 2, 1852.
iii. Francis William Taber, born March 3, 1855 and died February 22, 1880.
iv. Adelbert Taber, born January 24, 1857.
Benjamin J. Taber's parents were Dr. Benjamin Taber and Phebe Carpenter (1789-1851)b Dutchess NY, daughter of Stephen Carpenter and Hannah Hoag.
Phebe Jane Meader and Benjamin Taber settled in Hesper, Winneshiek, Iowa (near the border with Minnesota.) Their first son was Ervin Guyetto Taber.
Ervin married 1st Lois Taber Battey b. 1848 Starksboro,VT daughter of Nicholas Battey (1814-1891) and Martha Hoag (1818-1905). Ervin and Lois grew up togethr and the families migrated from VT to Hesper, Winneshiek, IA along with other members of their Society of Friends MM.
I have photos and much information on Ervin and Lois' life as teachers in Friendsville, TN, Cheyenne Reservation, Darlington, Indian Territory, and Cherokee Res. North Carolina where Lois Taber Battey Taber died on 24 Aug 1884. She had contracted a lung infection & lost her third child during a harsh winter in IT from which she never fully recovered.
Ervin and Lois had two daughters:
i. Emma Lois Taber, born 15 Dec 1874 Mahaska,IA, died 18 Feb 1966, Troy, Miami, OH She was 9 years old when her mother died. She was raised/educated by her father and stepmother, Margaret Ann Coffin (married 9 Dec 1885, Indiana)in Mexico. Emma Lois returned to Indiana to attend high school and Earlam College where she met her husband, Walter Clarence Peirce from Troy, Miami, Ohio on graduation day.
ii. Dora B Taber, born 8 Nov 1877 Mahaska, IA and died 26 Feb 1893 Matehuala, San Luis Polosi, Mexico. Dora did not thrive. Her stepmother brought her back to the US for diagnosis. There was no treatment available for her Juvenile Diabetes and Dora died at age 15.
Throughout her life, Emma Lois Taber Peirce was close to her step-sisters and brother born in Mexico. The family settled in Whittier California before 1900

Correction of spelling son's name: Erwin Guyetto Taber (we have his autobiography) was born January 6, 1849 in Lincoln, Vermont. He married August 9, 1873 Lois Taber Battey who thus becomes Lois Taber Battey Taber,(daughter of Nicholas Battey and Martha Hoag) in Hesper, Iowa. Lois died August 12, 1884, Cherokee Reservation, North Carolina.

Erwin Guyetto Taber married 2nd in a Friends ceremony, December 9,1885 at Sugar Plain, Indiana, Margaret . A. Coffin . They had 4 children born in Mexico. Lola Martha Taber, born April 12, 1889, Charles Erwin Taber, born September 24, 1891, Edna Carlota Taber, born March 13, 1894, and Anna Bell Taber, born June 17, 1896. Erwin Guyetto Taber died April 13, 1912, Whittier, California at 63 years of age.
