0217. Mercy Meader (1817 – p.1893)

Mercy (Mary) Meader, daughter of Joseph Meader (1788-1864) [0110] and Mehitable Varney (1789-1862), was born April 18, 1817. October 31, 1850 she married Levi Gove as his third wife. Levi Gove, son of Moses and Hannah Gove, was born February 22, 1802 in Weare, NH and died August 12, 1885 in Lynn, MA. Within two or three years after his birth, his family moved to Lincoln, Addison, VT, where they were among the first settlers. Levi was previously married to Ruth Varney, at Starksboro, VT on October 5, 1826 and to Widow Sarah Gorton Hule Hoag of Otsego County, NH.

They moved to South Berwick, ME, then to North Berwick for a short time, and then for a year or two to Lynn. They returned to South Berwick in the autumn of 1854, and the family lived there until 1866, when they moved back to Lynn, where she lived in 1893. Levi Gove was a farmer and laborer, and during his first residence in Lynn he was a gardener.

The children of Mercy Meader and Levi Gove were:
i. William Henry Gove, born September4, 1851 at South Berwick and died April 14, 1920. He was graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School and was a practicing attorney. January 5, 1882 at Lynn he married Caroline, daughter of Isaac Chase and Lydia (Estes) Pinkham. Lydia Pinkham was the maker of the famous medicine, and he became President and General Manager of the company.
ii. Eliza Hetta Gove, born March 21, 1857, probably in Lynn.
